Description - Other

Röbäcksdalen Field Research Station, situated in Umeå, is a key facility for diverse research activities in agricultural and environmental sciences. The research station is located around 2 km from Umeå city center so it is easy to access by train, flight and bus. Established nearly 60 years ago, it operates within a Natura 2000 area and Vindeln's biosphere reserve, and has soils conducive to farming and field research. The facilities support studies in agricultural sciences, animal science, biology, geochemisty, agro-ecology, soil science, and environmental science, offering access to land, technicians, climate and soil data, workshops, and laboratories. The facility includes a dairy barn housing 120 cows, equipped for measuring feed intake, weight, milk production, and greenhouse gas emissions. Two beehives at the station house Nordic bees. The station's urban location in Umeå encourages interdisciplinary research, making it a valuable resource for science, teaching, and applied studies. The infrastructure spans 300 hectares, hosting around 40 annual field trials and coordinating trials on three other field stations in northern Sweden. Röbäcksdalen is part of two thematic programs within SITES; Spectral and Water. In SITES Spectral data from the fields is collected using masts and drones equipped with spectral cameras. Samples for water chemistry are taken from Degernäs creek that flows through the fields, which also has continuous discharge measurements.
